What Is Medical Weight Management — and Is It Right for Me?

Losing weight isn't simply about eating less or exercising more. For many people, weight is influenced by genetics, hormones, medical conditions, medications, stress, sleep and lifestyle. That's why medical weight management takes a different approach. Rather than focusing on quick fixes, it provides structured, evidence-based support tailored to your individual health.

What is medical weight management?

Medical weight management is a clinician-led programme designed to help patients lose weight safely and sustainably. It begins with a comprehensive medical assessment, looking at your health, lifestyle and previous weight-loss experiences before developing an individual plan.

This may include:

  • Lifestyle advice

  • Nutritional guidance

  • Behavioural support

  • Monitoring of progress

  • Prescription weight-loss medication where clinically appropriate

Not everyone requires medication, and it is never prescribed without careful assessment.

At MeiLustre Clinic, the programme is delivered personally by Zheng Yu Hu, Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Independent Prescriber. A single named clinician oversees your entire journey — from initial eligibility assessment through to ongoing support.

Who may benefit?

Medical weight management may be appropriate if:

  • You have struggled to lose weight despite lifestyle changes

  • You have regained weight after previous diets

  • Your weight is affecting your health

  • You would benefit from ongoing clinical support and accountability

Everyone's circumstances are different, so suitability is always assessed individually.

Is medication always involved?

No. Medication is never the sole focus of the programme, and it isn't always appropriate. Where it does form part of the plan, it works alongside nutritional guidance and lifestyle support — and only following a full clinical assessment. In accordance with UK regulations and MHRA guidelines, prescription weight-management medicines cannot be advertised by name online, but your prescriber will discuss all options with you at your consultation.

Why medical supervision matters

Weight-loss medications have received considerable attention in recent years. While they can be highly effective for suitable patients, they are not appropriate for everyone. A medical consultation ensures that treatment is safe, clinically appropriate, carefully monitored, and combined with sustainable lifestyle changes. Successful long-term weight management involves much more than medication alone.

Setting realistic goals

Healthy weight loss is gradual. Rather than promising rapid transformations, medical weight management focuses on achievable, sustainable progress that improves long-term health. Small, consistent changes often produce the most lasting results.

What does the journey look like?

It begins with a confidential screening and eligibility check. If suitable, you attend a face-to-face baseline assessment in East Molesey (£99), which includes body-composition mapping and treatment planning.

Ongoing care includes monthly clinical reviews (in person or by video), direct support during clinic hours, and regular re-assessments. The programme is built for the long term — not a quick fix.

Is it right for you?

If you've found yourself stuck in a cycle of losing and regaining weight, a medically supervised programme may provide the structure and support you've been looking for.

The first step is a comprehensive consultation where we discuss your medical history, your goals and whether medical weight management is the right option for you. Every recommendation is based on your individual circumstances, with your health and long-term wellbeing at the centre of every decision.

To check your eligibility, complete the confidential screening form at www.meilustreclinic.co.uk or call 07889 195 143.
